- 2 August - King William II of England dies in a hunting accident in the New Forest; he is succeeded by Henry I of England.[1]
- 5 August - Coronation of Henry I.[1]
- 23 September - Archbishop of Canterbury Anselm returns from exile at the invitation of Henry I.[2]
- 11 November - Henry I marries Matilda of Scotland, daughter of King Malcolm III of Scotland.[3]

- 20 July - Robert Curthose, Duke of Normandy invades England to claim the throne.[2]
- By the Treaty of Alton, Robert II, Duke of Normandy recognises Henry I as King of England.[2]
