During their acceptance speech, the Farrelly Brothers made a joke about the recent Columbine High School massacre. The comment was edited out of the television broadcast and the Farrellys issued a statement several days later apologizing if their remark was misunderstood.

Jim Carrey came to the ceremony that evening in disguise, looking very much like Jim Morrison. The producers of the show have said they had no idea it was Carrey until he stood up to accept his award. During his speech, he accepted the award "on behalf of my new biker friends"; he also said "there's some fine lookin' pussy in this room tonight" and, still in character, implored MTV to play more rock music, asking "would it kill you to play a little Foghat?"

Matt Dillon was not present to accept his award; but at the end of Stephen Dorff's speech, he said "Chucky, better luck next time". The camera then cut to Chucky the Doll flipping off Dorff.
