[edit] 2000 season
Larry Smith's was the coach in 1999. After the poor results, he was fired and replaced by new coach Gary Pinkel (see also Missouri Tigers football under Gary Pinkel). They began the season with a 50-20 win over Western Illinois, but the rest of the season collapsed after they were destroyed by a 53-point margin loss to No. 17 Clemson. Although they managed to beat to conference teams, they always fell short to ranked teams. This was a problem usual to 1990's Missouri teams.
