The 2002 FIBA World Championship was an international basketball tournament held by the International Basketball Federation in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA from August 29 to September 8, 2002.
In spite of hosting the event, the U.S. team was only able to finish 6th, one of their lowest showings in international play. This led some analysts to call it the end of the Dream Team.[citation needed]
The final game between Argentina and Yugoslavia featured a very controversial non-call late in the game. With 0.8 seconds left, and with the score tied at 75-75, a play that featured Argentine player Hugo Sconochini driving to the basket and being guarded by Yugoslavia's Marko Jarić occurred. Argentine players (and most neutral observers) felt that the Greek referee Nikos Pitsilkas should have called a foul on Jaric, a decision that would haven given Argentina the opportunity to win the game with 2 free throws, and took their vehement protests to the referee. The non-call sent the game into overtime which Yugoslavia finally won. Argentina finished the tournament with the best record, losing only one game - the final.
