[edit] Draw
[edit] First Round (128)
The upset was Venus Williams' loss to the previously-little-known Tszvetana Pironkova. A shocking second set -- Williams lost 6-0 -- and over 60 unforced errors meant the Bulgarian, who was ranked 94 at the time, was able to prevail.
Other seeds to be knocked out in the first round were Elena Dementieva (seeded 9th), Klara Koukalova (29th), Anabel Medina Garrigues (28th), Ai Sugiyama (26th) and Tatiana Golovin (24th).
Jelena Dokic was defeated in three sets by Virginie Razzano of France. Dokic last played in the Open in 2001, also losing in the first round, then to Lindsay Davenport. Dokic and her then-coach and father, Damir, shortly left the country and claimed that the draw had been rigged. This time Dokic left the Open disappointed by her loss, but pleased to be welcomed as a representative for Australia.[citation needed]
