The 2007 Norwegian Football Cup Final took place at Ullevaal Stadion in Oslo on November 11, 2007. The match was contested between heavy favorites Lillestrøm and underdogs Haugesund.
With Lillestrøm playing in the top tiered Tippeligaen and Haugesund in the second tiered Adeccoligaen, the Norwegian media dubbed Lillestrøm the biggest favorites to win the cup final since Rosenborg met Fyllingen in 1990. [1] Haugesund surprisingly made it to the cup final, becoming the first team outside Tippeligaen in 10 years to reach the final. However, players from Haugesund admitted to having been lucky with the draw in both the quarter and semi finals, where Haugesund avoided the big clubs. [2]
[edit] Trivia
- This was Tom Nordlie's first gold medal in his career as coach.
- Lillestrøm had appeared in eleven cup finals before, but has only won four times before (1977, 1978, 1981, and 1985).
- Haugesund had never before been in a cup final, but one of the club's predecessors, Haugar, appeared twice, losing in both 1961 and 1979.
- Both teams have birds as mascots. The supporter club of Haugesund is called Maakeberget (Seagull Hill), while Lillestrøm's is Kanarifansen (The Canary Fans).
- This was the first cup final for both Lillestrøm-coach Tom Nordlie and Haugesund-coach Rune Skarsfjord. However, Skarsfjord was an assistant coach at Rosenborg when the team won the 2003 Norwegian Football Cup Final. Skarsfjord is also the son of Terje Skarsfjord, who won the cup in 1996 with Tromsø.
