[edit] Format
The 1996 championship used the traditional "knock-out" format. The provincial champions of Munster, Connacht and Leinster automatically qualified for and were drawn against each other in the All-Ireland semi-finals. The Ulster champions played against London in a "quarter-final" and thus qualified for the semi-finals.
[edit] All-Ireland Final
The 1995 All-Ireland final was contested by the Munster champions Clare and the Leinster champions Offaly. Clare's rise to the final was something of a fairytale as they hadn't won the title since 1914. An own goal by the Clare keeper, Davy FitzGerald, meant that Offaly were winning at half time. However, the Banner men, inspired by their manager Ger Loughnane went on to win the final by 1-13 to 2-8.
