Alliance for Full Participation

The Alliance for Full Participation (AFP) is a formal partnership, founded in 2003, of leading organizations serving the developmental disabilities field. They share a commitment to the successful inclusion of people with developmental disabilities into the mainstream of American life.

The AFP partnering organizations are:

In September 2005, 2400 people including self-advocates, human service providers, researchers and state liaisons attended the AFP Summit in Washington, D.C. Discussion points included:

  • the closing of segregated institutions, schools and sheltered employment workshops
  • community inclusion
  • employment and volunteer opportunities for people with disabilities
  • financial support for disability services
  • including people with disabilities in the planning, governance and leadership of disability services and programs
  • an end to the usage of the term “mental retardation”
  • control of public funds for disability services
  • wages for direct support professionals
  • Medicaid reform
