Cochin University of Science & Technology (CUSAT) is a university in Kochi, also known as Cochin or Ernakulam. Founded in 1971, the university consists of three campuses, two in Kochi and one in Kuttanad, about 66 km inland. Nearly 2,000 students engage yearly in various areas of undergraduate and postgraduate study. The university awards degrees in various fields of engineering and allied subjects at the Undergraduate, Post Graduate and Doctoral Level. Admissions are based on an All India Entrance Examination known as CAT (Common Admission Test) and is offered to students who have scored fifty percent or more in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at the 10+2 level. Also various departmental tests are conducted for the Post Graduate Courses. The has been proposed to become "Indian Institute of Engineering, Science and Technology Kochi"[1] i.e. IIEST Kochi.
Originally known as University of Cochin, the university came into being in 1971 through an Act of the Legislature that was the result of a concerted campaign for postgraduate education in the State of Kerala.
Reorganization of the university into Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) saw the fulfillment of the aspirations of the pioneers who spearheaded the movement for establishment of a science & technology university in the state. The process of reorientation resulted in redefining the objectives as “the promotion of undergraduate and postgraduate studies and advanced research in applied science, technology, industry, commerce, management and social science”.

[edit] Campuses
There are three separate campuses, two in Cochin and one at Pulinkunnu, about 65 km south of Cochin.
[edit] The Main (Thrikkakara)- School Of Engineering Campus
The Main Campus is located ~1 km off the National Highway 47 at South Kalamassery. The total 180 acre campus mainly consists of two blocks namely S.O.E campus and Siberia campus, acting as a center for several Schools/Departments listed below. S.O.E campus acts as a primary campus holding office for all the communications from the administrative building. It also has several lab rooms in and around the building. It is equipped with a state-of-the-art computer center building providing free internet service to the University students. With the fully computerised University library located close to the Department of Electronics(DOE) building, this campus serves as a technical hub for the entire University. The main administrative building of the Cochin University Of Science And Technology is located close to the DOE building. The Siberia campus block contains all the classrooms for the engineering students, along with a new lab building(NLB) which houses many department centers and a variety of labs for many engineering divisions.
There are 3 men's hostels namely Siberia, Sarovar and Sanathana and 2 ladies hostels, Aishwarya and Athulya. Also, staff quarters are available for working people besides other support services. Apart from these, several off-campus residence facilities are available for the engineering students.
[edit] The City (Lakeside) Campus
The Lakeside Campus, ~12 km away from the Main Campus, has an idyllic setting in the heart of the City on the estuarine water front. The School of Marine Science, a part of the Lake side campus, recently renamed as School of Ocean Science and Technology has a long history of over 65 years of academic pursuit in marine science. Presently the School of Ocean Science and Technology comprises five well established departments with academic and administrative autonomy and is involved in several teaching and research programs .The various departments include department of Physical Oceanography, Department of Atmospheric Science, Department of Marine Geology and Geophysics, Department of Marine Biology and Department of Chemical Oceanography. It has an excellent library which regarded as one of the largest marine science library in Asia and a research vessel for coastal water studies. The School has academic interactions with other universities and research institutes in and outside India. Other than teaching and research the School also addresses various issues of regional importance.
[edit] The Pulinkunnu Campus
The recently acquired Pulinkunnu Campus in Kuttanad (Alleppey District) is about 65 km away from the Main Campus. Kuttanad comprises Kerala’s serene, picturesque backwaters, the enrapturing scenic beauty of which is to be seen to be believed. The Pulinkunnu Campus is home to the Cochin University College of Engineering, Kuttanad] (CUCEK) and the Cochin University College of Computer Applications (CUCCA).The Campus is surrounded by beautiful villages , temples and churches. Moncompu Bagavathy temple is located close to this campus.
[edit] Departments
[edit] Department Of Ship Technology
The most prestigious undergraduate course of CUSAT. This Department is one of the pioneers in the field of Naval Architecture education in this country and was established with an aim to create a new and dynamic generation of Naval Architects to meet the requirements of the Indian Shipbuilding Industry, Ship Classification Societies, R&D organizations, Indian Navy, and related organisations With this in view, a B.Tech. programme in Naval Architecture and Ship Building was started in 1975.This Department maintains active collaboration and interaction with IITs, foreign Universities, shipyards and other. These organizations have been generous in extending their facilities and expertise to impart training to our students. The fruitful collaboration of this Department with Rostock University, Germany dates back to 1978 and remains as an important milestone in the development of this Department. The curriculum was drawn up and updated in consultation with experts from various academic institutions and industries. This has brought the course curriculum in conformity with international standards. The Ministry of Surface Transport, Govt. of India approved the B.Tech.(NA&SB) courses course for the M.O.T. Certificate Examination, thus enabling the B.Tech. graduates to venture into the field of Marine Engineering also. The Indian Navy has recognised this department as a centre for the higher education of their officers. The Department has a highly qualified and dedicated faculty, an excellent library, computer centre, laboratories and workshops. The faculty have over 100 research publications to their credit. The quality of education imparted and the resulting professional competence of the graduates enabled the Department to achieve a unique record of over 100 percent placement of its graduates in India and abroad. The intake of students is kept low to enable them get personal attention in their studies, professional training and career development.
[edit] Centre of Excellence in Lasers and Optoelectronic Sciences
Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) has facilities for manpower training in Photonics and related fields. CUSAT established a separate centre CELOS in the month of July 2002. The activities under the CELOS have been proposed by the Department of Physics and Department of Electronics in CUSAT.
Another activity of CELOS is the conduct of the five year integrated M.Sc degree course in Photonics. Five batches of 20 students each have so far joined the course and the first batch is now in the ninth semester of the ten semester Integrated M.Sc degree course in Photonics. The first batch would be passing out in July 2007.
[edit] School of Legal Studies
The School of Legal Studies is located on the campus of the Cochin University of Science and Technology. It is located about 15 kilometers north of Kochi city, the Queen of the Arabian Sea. The School was established in 1962 as the Department of Law of the Kerala University. With the creation of the Cochin University in 1971, the School became its integral part.
