General elections were held in the Cook Islands on September 27, 2006 in order to elect 24 MPs to the Legislative Council. The election was called two years early after the opposition Cook Islands Party won a by-election in Matevera, eliminating the government's majority. A total of 8,497 voters turned out to vote.

Following the counting of special votes, the seat of Akaoa was a tie between the Cook Islands Party's Teariki Heather and the Democratic Party's Keu Mataroa. An electoral petition has been filed, and the seat may require a by-election. Eight other electoral petitions have also been filed, in the seats of Amuri-Ureia, Arutanga, Avatiu, Manihiki, Matavera, Mauke, Titikaveka, and Vaipae-Tautu.
