The Coombe Women's Hospital is a maternity hospital founded in 1826 by Mrs. Margaret Boyle in Dublin, Ireland.
[edit] Names
Originally a part of the Meath Hospital in Dublin's Liberties area, it was renamed the "Coombe Lying-in Hospital" in 1829. Located then in Heytesbury Street, it was granted a royal charter in 1867 which alllowed it to receive public as well as private funds. In 1967 it moved to new premises nearby in Dolphin's Barn and was renamed the "Coombe Women's Hospital" in 1993. From January 2008 its name has again changed to the "Coombe Women and Infants Maternity Hospital", but it has always been known to Dubliners as simply as "The Coombe".
[edit] Services
It is one of Ireland's busiest pre-natal and maternity hospitals, with 13,000 births (out of about 100,000) in 1999. It provides work experience to three training colleges.
