Elephant Butte is a city in Sierra County, New Mexico, near Elephant Butte Reservoir and State Park. The population was 1,390 at the 2000 census.

Elephant Butte is located at (33.189809, -107.222873)[1].
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.0 square miles (7.7 km²), all of it land.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 1,390 people, 689 households, and 471 families residing in the city. The population density was 470.4 people per square mile (181.3/km²). There were 1,247 housing units at an average density of 422.0/sq mi (162.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 91.94% White, 0.07% African American, 1.58% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 5.04% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.31% of the population.
There were 689 households out of which 11.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.7% were married couples living together, 5.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% were non-families. 25.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.02 and the average family size was 2.38.
In the city the population was spread out with 12.0% under the age of 18, 3.2% from 18 to 24, 13.7% from 25 to 44, 38.5% from 45 to 64, and 32.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 58 years. For every 100 females there were 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,705, and the median income for a family was $37,344. Males had a median income of $30,809 versus $22,125 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,345. About 7.4% of families and 10.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 26.4% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
[edit] Misunderstandings
The similar spelling of butte and butt can lead to some amusing situations. In 2007, the Indigenous Sculpture Society, which creates sculptures inspired by towns with unusual names, went to Elephant Butte intending to build a monument from elephant dung. Mayor Bob Barnes then had to point out their mistake; "I had to explain... what a butte is."[3]
