Hated is a 1994 documentary directed by Todd Phillips about the life of GG Allin, an extreme punk musician whose career ended with his death from a drug overdose in 1993. Allin was infamous for excessive behavior (drug addiction, alcoholism, physical violence), and his stage shows became confrontational events involving indecent exposure (performing naked was one of Allin's most common rituals), onstage defecation, physical assault (both on and by Allin), and obscene language.
The documentary included concert and rehearsal footage as well as interviews with Allin, fellow bandmembers, friends, detractors and dedicated fans. It discusses Allin's abusive family life (headed by a fanatically religious father) in rural New Hampshire , and continues through his personal evolution into an extreme performance artist. Footage of his controversial spoken word appearances includes a violent physical confrontation with audience members.
The documentary contains footage of Allin cavorting at a party (perhaps the most graphic content of the film), defecating during shows, mutilating himself and abusing concertgoers. Allin's appearance on Geraldo Rivera's talk show and footage of his funeral and corpse are also included.
Hated was released on DVD in December of 1999. It featured a band rehearsal session for what was to be the last show Allin performed, in New York on the evening before his death.
Hated was re-released with new footage in 2007. The first 5,000 copies came with free temporary tattoos based on some of Allin's real tattoos, and a mail-in offer for a poster featuring artwork of Allin painted by serial killer and friend John Wayne Gacy.
