John Other Day, a Native American of the Sioux, otherwise known as the Dakota in Minnesota, sought peace between Indian tribes and white settlers. During the Dakota Uprising of 1862, Other Day guided 62 whites 150 miles through hostile territory to safety and later served as a scout for the forces commanded by General Henry H. Sibley. In recognition of his service, Congress granted him recognition for his services.
